Corbulo tunnel in N434 Regional Road between highways A4 and A44 near Leiden open to traffic

Corbulo tunnel in N434 Regional Road between highways A4 and A44 near Leiden open to traffic after 12 years of planning, design and construction

The Corbulo tunnel near Leiden (Netherlands) has been open to traffic since the morning of Saturday July 5, 2024. The 2.5-kilometer-long tunnel provides a better connection to and from the Leiden region.

The brand-new tunnel is part of the N434, the new provincial road that connects the A4 and A44 highways through split-level interchanges Ommedijk and Hofvliet (picture below).

The new road, which is expected to be used by 9 million vehicles per year, should reduce traffic congestion in Leiden. The connection is part of the so-called RijnlandRoute between Katwijk and Leiden.

From the preliminary design phase in 2017 to the opening in July 2024, I was responsible for the road safety audits on this beautiful project. One audit remains: after three months of operation I will have to carry out an audit on the N434 including the Corbulotunnel, to assess the actual traffic behaviour.

Great to see that this 12 km long route has finally been put into use. Congratulations to the Province of South Holland and the contractor Joint Venture COMOL5!
